Whilst plasterboard is a fairly common material in construction, it cannot be disposed of in landfill. Plasterboard cannot decompose, but instead releases the pungent (rotten eggs smelling), flammable and highly toxic gas hydrogen sulphide when disposed of alongside biodegradable waste.
As licensed waste carriers, we collect plasterboard waste at our Lower Compton facility and send it to specialist re-processors so that 100% of old plasterboard can be safely recycled into new materials

What do we classify as plasterboard waste?
It’s vital that we make sure the right bins are used for the right types of waste so that we can recover and recycle as much as possible. What we call plasterboard waste, you may also know as gypsum waste.

Whilst plasterboard is non-hazardous, if not disposed of correctly, it can release a toxic gas harmful to humans. For this reason, plasterboard cannot be disposed of in general waste. Hills Waste Solutions can collect plasterboard and process it as a separate waste stream, with all material being sent for recycling.
Plasterboard is classified as “mirror non-hazardous” waste, but can still release a harmful gas when disposed of incorrectly, so should only ever be disposed of at specialist recycling centres or by licensed waste carriers.
Plasterboard, and other gypsum containing materials, are not biodegradable and should never be mixed with biodegradable waste. If disposed of alongside biodegradable waste, the gypsum can react to release a pungent smelling and highly toxic gas: hydrogen sulphide.
