Lower Compton drilling, public event and Northacre MBT update

17 July 2026 - updates on the drilling of gas wells at Lower Compton Landfill, the public event in Calne, and unplanned maintenance at Northacre.

Gas well installations at Lower Compton Landfill

The drilling and installation of six additional gas wells commenced this week with Environment Agency officers in attendance observing the works on newly capped areas of landfill. Work has now been completed with wells being tested and then connected to our existing gas extraction network by Friday 17 July. All gas extracted is used for electricity generation as is standard at the site.

Lower Compton Landfill - public drop in event – Calne Town Hall, 21 July

Following the publication last week of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) Public Health Assessment in Calne, the Environment Agency is hosting a public drop in engagement event at Calne Town Hall on 21 July from 16:00 to 19:00. Representatives from Hills Waste Solutions will also be in attendance.

Northacre MBT Update

Unplanned maintenance on one of two biohall cranes has now been completed as planned. During the two-week shutdown at the MBT, Hills crews have taken the opportunity for other maintenance and cleaning in the reception bays and in the biofilter. The MBT is scheduled to recommence waste acceptance on Monday 20 July as previously indicated.
