Reliable and flexible collection services
Most of the time, the routine of regular, scheduled collections will be exactly what you need. They happen efficiently, like clockwork, so that you almost don’t notice. But, sometimes, food retail businesses ebb and flow with the seasons. Making ice cream? Busy summer ahead. Christmas puddings? Maybe February means more planning than producing. That’s why our partnership approach means we offer a flexible collection service, allowing you to easily amend the frequency of our visits whenever you want. It’s a simple change that can make a big difference.

Recycling food waste - even in its packaging
Whether it’s packaged or not, to make it easier for our customers, all waste food goes in the same dedicated bin and is recycled locally using innovative anaerobic digestion technology, creating renewable energy for the National Grid and bio-fertiliser for agriculture. The packaging is separated and is then sent to an Energy from Waste Facility where energy is generated and distributed back to the national grid. Recycling your waste food is a win for you too, reducing the amount of general waste you send to landfill. We make life easy with specialist food waste bins in a range of sizes, and we always line our bins with fresh and hygienic biodegradable liners after every collection. Plus, our purpose-built collection vehicles avoid leakages and manoeuvre easily around the back of High Street premises.
Experts in handling all waste types for food retailers
Frequently asked questions
-
Do you accept packaged food?
Hills Waste is committed to the responsible management of food waste and accepts all types, including those that are still in packaging. This is particularly important as the UK creates 9.52 million tonnes of food waste per year (source) with food retail businesses such as supermarkets expected to produce a certain amount of waste in packaging.
-
How are the food waste bins kept clean?
Food waste is inherently prone to smells, liquid runoff & decay. In order to mitigate this we provide bags with our food waste bins so that loose food has no contact with the bin itself.
-
What types of bins are best suited for food retail?
Our food waste bins are available in two sizes.
Our small food bin has a capacity of 120 litres, or 1-2 black bags. Need more room? Our standard food bin is 240 litres and can hold 2-3 black bags. The bins are suitable for raw and cooked meat, bones, fat, non-packaged food waste, food waste in packaging, fruit and vegetables. Learn more about our food waste bins. -
What happens to food retail waste?
The retail sector wastes 277,000 tonnes of food each year (source) which can contribute to harming the environment. Therefore it is important for the food retail sector to dispose of food waste responsibly, and by partnering with Hills Waste we ensure it is treated and recycled to generate electricity and organic fertiliser.
