Lower Compton landfill action plan update

Further to our previous updates, all works to place soils across the operational landfill site at Lower Compton have been completed, and trommel fines are no longer being used as cover material.

The engineered final cap placement commenced on 11 May and is due to be completed within 12 weeks dependent on weather. We have agreed with the local planning authority that these are emergency works and that therefore our contractor is able to work over weekends. Once complete, permanent gas extraction infrastructure will be installed across the capped area.

We envisage that approximately 40% of the current operational cell will be capped this summer and that the remainder of the cell will be filled over the coming months and then capped this time next year. The final cap can not be installed until a significant area of the cell is full, these works are programmed for drier months as clay is impossible to place to the standard required during wetter weather.

We have agreed with the EA to review our management systems for both the remainder of the operational cell and for future cells which will include a further reduction in the amount of trommel fines accepted at the site.
