24 July 2026 - updates on the action plan at Lower Compton Landfill, the public event in Calne, and an update on the MBT at Northacre.
Northacre MBT, Westbury
The recent repairs to one of our cranes in the biohall have now been completed and the MBT recommenced waste acceptance on Monday 20 July as previously indicated. Additional works have been carried out on the biofilter and reports on the biofilter have now been submitted to the EA.
Lower Compton Landfill Action Plan
Since agreeing an action plan for Lower Compton Landfill with the Environment Agency (EA) in April, Hills Waste Solutions is pleased to report that all short-term and medium-term works have been completed ahead of schedule.
This means that the 45% of the current landfill cell that has reached final waste levels has now been capped with clay to a depth of 1m. Depending on volumes of waste brought to the site, the remaining open cell is expected to be filled and capped by the summer of 2027. Since June, as part of the action plan, Hills has reduced the level of inputs of trommel fines to 25% of total inputs.
In addition to capping, six more gas wells have been installed in the current cell and have been added to our existing gas extraction network which is used to generate electricity on-site as is standard.
Calne public drop-in event
On Tuesday 21 July, a public drop-in event , hosted by the EA took place at Calne Town Hall. In support of representatives from the EA and the UK Health Security Agency, Directors of Hills Waste Solutions were pleased to attend and have the opportunity to engage with Calne residents and address any concerns that they have.
Lower Compton Landfill bomb disposal
On Wednesday 22 July, during normal site operations at the landfill, a 60mm mortar shell was discovered. It is not known whether this ordinance had been brought onto site or whether it was the remains of WWII activities at RAF Lower Compton. Thankfully, the mortar was found to be inert and removed safely by military bomb disposal with no impact on employees or operations at the site.
