Lower Compton Landfill: August 2026 Gas Well and Infrastructure Updates

12 August 2026 – updates on the action plan at Lower Compton Landfill

The installation of six gas wells in the current landfill cell was completed on 17 July 2026. The wells were connected to the existing gas collection network – which is used to generate electricity on-site.

An area to the northeast of the current cell has been covered with soils and four gas extraction pinwells will be installed to a depth of 6m week commencing 17 August 2026.

An additional horizontal gas extraction well has also been installed to the west of the current cell.

The installation of further gas extraction/collection infrastructure will continue be assessed and installed as the filling of the operational cell progresses.

The elevated temperatures experienced this summer have and continue to cause overheating issues with the gas combustion engines and associated infrastructure - with the operators undertaking repairs and upgrades where required. If one or more of the gas combustion engines are non-operational, the flare is utilised to maintain gas extraction.
