Update on Northacre MBT and Lower Compton Landfill

A critical component on one of two internal cranes at the MBT in Westbury has failed and Hills has, this week, shut down the plant ready to make repairs.

Repairs are scheduled to take two weeks from Monday 06 July. The plant will then restart and receive waste again from Monday 20 July.

In order to make repairs and clean the reception pits, it will at times be necessary for a reception door or the biohall entrance door to be opened. When this is required the length of time doors are opened will be kept to the absolute minimum and only partially opened.

Odour abatement fans will be positioned adjacent to this area and the biofilter extraction system will be functioning as normal.

As no waste will be processed through the refinement section of the building and no residual landfill residues will be stored, we will also isolate the extraction from refinement to ensure maximum extraction from the biohall.

During this period, new waste is not being accepted at the MBT and is being diverted to Lower Compton where it is being immediately transferred into landfill.

Capping works at the landfill will be completed imminently as per our action plan. From Monday 13 July six new gas extraction wells are being drilled in the newly capped landfill. The gas from these wells along with existing wells at the site is used to generate electricity on site.

Hills continues to work closely with the Environment Agency in relation to its environmental permits and compliance at all of its sites.
