Northacre MBT, Lower Compton Landfill and UKHSA report
Please see further updates below on the mainternance at the Northacre MBT, Lower Compton landfill clay capping and the recently published UK Health Security Agency report on Lower Compton.
Northacre maintenance
Further to our notice last week that the MBT would be shut for two weeks for unplanned maintenance on one of the biohall cranes, we can confirm that maintenance is going to plan and that the MBT plant will restart as normal from Monday 20 July.
As mentioned previously, waste imports to the MBT are being diverted to Lower Compton Landfill.
Lower Compton Landfill
We are pleased to report that all permanent and temporary capping has been completed at Lower Compton on areas of landfill that are up to final levels. These engineering works have been completed ahead of schedule as per our previously published action plan.
Subsoils and restoration soils are now being placed on top of the capped areas of landfill.
We have welcomed two officers from the Environment Agency to site this week to discuss the ongoing work and have confirmed with them that additional gas wells will be installed as planned from Monday 13 July.
Additional waste diverted from the Northacre MBT is being landfilled immediately and has had no detrimental impact on operations at Lower Compton.
UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) report on air quality near Lower Compton
Hills welcomes the report from the UKHSA regarding the monitoring of air quality in Calne and any effects on human health. Hills has been working with the Environment Agency consistently during that time.
Since May, Hills has accelerated the rate at which completed areas of landfill have been clay capped. Hills is also increasing the number of gas wells at the landfill with captured emissions being used for the generation of electricity.
